17. Art and Morality

You Don’t Say

He chose the least
Of men to paint
A soul without a story

For yesterday was news
To him
Of Sunday’s sporting glory

Wilted from his
Tattered coat
A flower from the day

The horse he bet on
Won a race
A mare named “You Don’t Say”

He shared
The winnings from his dream
With two eternal friends

Three crackers
That his luck had bought
In hoping he might win.

The artist chose the least
Of men
To paint an honest face —

To say that love
Between old friends
Is not about the race

Everyday there’s something to celebrate. Make yours the life of song, not the trail of anxiety.
